We are asked this question multiple times everyday. Since he started Eurotubes in we have had the unique opportunity to listen to and play hundreds of different amps. During the first few years we worked with local players here in the studio one-on-one to achieve the best results for each.
This gave us the opportunity to play, and more importantly listen, to hundreds of different amps. Thousands of hours were spent trying different combinations of preamp tubes and power tubes to better understand their characteristics and tonal differences, and we continue to do this today.
Before we get into methods, reviews and brands we would like to answer some of you who have asked us about the new production Telefunken tubes. Most players who know us understand that we have a very tight relationship with JJ Electronic. In fact JJ verified that Telefunken is not even a customer of JJ Electronic and said they must be getting them from another dealer!Sailboat keel weight
So, you will not find reference on this page to the new Telefunken tubes because they are in fact JJ Electronic tubes. Continuing on, we quickly learned that the method most people used to compare tubes, which is to set the tone controls to one place and leave them for the entire test was inadequate.
This procedure does not allow you to get acquainted with the capabilities of the tubes. Some tubes get sweet when treble is dialed in and some get very piercing. The following opinions reflect our opinions and the opinions of the vast majority of our customers, you can find well over a thousand customer reviews here.
Below is a list of the most common power and pre-amp tubes. A good way to describe the tone in one word would be to call it "cardboard". They make your amp sound like a big Wheaties box.
The low end is flabby and only gets worse as more lows are dialed in. The highs are piercing and brittle. These tubes are just flat and lifeless sounding without much harmonic content.
When over driven they get real grainy and the breakup transition is quick and not smooth. Sovtek EL84M: This tube has the same tonal characteristics as the standard Sovtek EL84 and is even more lifeless and less touch responsive. Electro Harmonix EL These are sovtek tubes and all the above applies. It should be against the law to muddy a good name like this The problem is finding good ones that are matched. They have nice harmonics and breakup pretty evenly.
The upper mid and highs are this tubes strong points. Nice detail even when distorted. These are nice, warm sounding tubes with good dynamics, nice harmonics.
This tube has good definition but is hard to drive into distortion. A nice tube overall but we would use the EI before spending the money on these. They work pretty good for Hi-Fi. The mids are thick and harmonically complex.
The highs are sweet and smooth. These tubes are very punchy with a nice chime. When over driven they get nice and thick and do not loose their detail. The break-up is very smooth and linear and they are very responsive to touch.Spiral filament winding does seem to have an effect. The noise floor is better than the standard ECC83S. Frequency response is excellent. In the lower register of guitar it produces a nice thump.
Great for palm muting, drop tunings and percussive rhythm. When I slammed the front end of my amp with a boost pedal the overdrive was quite musical and focused. I also ran a pair of these tubes in my phono stage with good results. All our tubes are guaranteed for 3 months from the date of purchase.
Any exceptions will be noted on that tube's Warranty tab If you receive a tube that does not perform to the manufacturer's specifications, please do the following: - contact us to get a return authorization - return it via regular mail within 90 days from when we shipped it, and we will provide an exchange or refund of the full purchase price of the tube.
We can not accept returns that don't have an authorization, are past 3 month, or are returned improperly. These guidelines may be updated without notice.
I got a pair of these yesterday to find out what they could do in guitar amps, and I was impressed. The gain was just as well matched.Np435 torque rating
I have received the brand new JJ e83cc frame grid valves to try in V1 of all my heads, so excited to try these too, as I have seen great reviews and the EQ curve of the valves have a mid boost So I want to be clear here The E83CC is a different tube but still a 12ax7.

However, in reality there are comparative gain differences among 12AX7s. Today, it is by far the most common preamp tube used for electric guitar amplification and there is an almost overwhelming supply of current production options to choose from. The purpose of this comparison is simply to provide guitar players with a frame of reference to help in finding the best current production 12AX7 for their needs.
The 12AX7 is a 9-pin miniature, high-mu, twin triode. What does that mean? The 9-pin miniature part tells us what kind of socket the tube plugs into. It has nine thin pins arranged along the circumference of a circle with a diameter of just under half of an inch.
There is a large gap between pins 1 and 9 to ensure that the tube can only be plugged in one way.
This gives us a general category of amplification that the tube was designed for as compared to other preamp tube types like the "medium-mu" 12AU7.
The twin triode part tells us that there are two identical and independent triodes contained within the one tube. A triode is the most basic tube structure that allows for signal amplification and it has three electrodes: plate, grid and cathode.
Each tube sample was tested in the same Fender black face style preamp circuit as shown in the schematic below with bass and treble set to their maximum.
A frequency generator was used to measure voltage gain and plot the frequency response from 10 Hz to 18, Hz. From the frequency plot it could be seen that there are three extrema at about 50 Hz, Hz and 4, Hz. These three frequencies were then used to quickly measure the low, mid and high frequency voltage gain on the same number of samples for each tube in our comparison. The average from each tube's samples was then calculated and used for comparison. The smallest average low frequency gain tube was used as the reference for a gain of "1" and the largest average low frequency gain tube was used as the reference for a gain of "10".
This gain reference method was then repeated for both the mid and high frequency averages. Each tube sample was again tested in the same preamp circuit and an oscilloscope was connected to the amplifier output to monitor the amplitude of the voltage spike produced by tapping on the tube's glass envelope. The average voltage spike from each tube's samples was then calculated and used for comparison. A custom 12AX7 switching box was constructed to allow for a quick switch comparison of six tubes at a time while plugged into the V1 socket of a Marshall JCM guitar amplifier.
A separate filament transformer was used on the switching box to simultaneously heat all six comparison tube filaments without overheating the amplifier's power transformer.Log in or Sign up.
The Gear Page. Jul 20, 1. Messages: 2, I believe LV is recommending these tubes as well Bob suggested that these tubes would be ideal for V1 clean channel in the Hiwatt, all my friend uses but that they most likely wouldn't work in V2 overdrive channel or in other "high gain" applications as they tend to "squeal," or at least "can" be made to squeal in those applications.
The highs didn't seem as harsh, yet it didn't seem to "attenuate' or roll off any highs either, and the mids really seemed to come to the forefront with a nice clarity, yet complex as well.V2 Shootout: JTM45 with Mullard, Amperex and JJ 12ax7
To my ears it sounded the best in V2, while I was plugged straight into Bright 1, volume on 4. It didn't sound as good in V1 with me plugged into Normal 1 nor did it sound as good in V 2 while I was using my Y-Cable and plugged into Normal 1 and Bright 1. This tube leans EVER so slightly to the dark side, thus the reason, at least to my ears that it didn't sound as dynamic in V1, or mixed with the 12AY7.
To my ears though, it's the mids that this tube seems to bring out, are what makes it a winner in my Tweed Twin.Dji spark modified smart battery
Complex, clear, and detailed, with a tremendous "sweetness" to them. The tube doesn't have as much gain as other 12AX7's I've tried in that positon, in my application that is a good thing yet it seems to give me the impression that it has a lot of gain.
VERY full, yet never muddy, and very dynamic. It's not quite as "fat" sounding as with the Y-Cable, but it's not anywhere near as thin sounding as just plugging into Bright 1 can be with some other 12AX7's I've tried in V 2. When I performed a search I found a few previous threads that said some of these tubes have gone microphonic after a very short period of time. I hope that's not the "extended" case, because I think JJ Bob might be onto something here.
Dull, boring, and lifeless is how I would describe them. Night and day between the old tubes and the new ones IMHO.
SuperReverb2Jul 20, Jul 21, 2. Messages: 1, I just got a pair of these pre's as well. They are getting better but still have a ways to go. I tried various combinations and like the C9 and GT-M's better GreazygeoJul 21, Jul 21, 3.
Messages: Also I have had no issues with them in 2nd and 3rd gain stages of high gain amps. But I think they have a bigger better sound stage and better highs. Of corse they are not NOS, but I think they are the best overall sounding new production tubes today. And are a good choice for most applications. You can get the ECC's in higher gain, but they are not as plentiful per production run.
They still have plenty of gain. Jul 21, 4. Funny is I actually prefer them in the V2 and V3 positons. Also get them from a reputable dealer that matches them for gain. I think most fall in the low 's on average. All our tubes are guaranteed for 3 months from the date of purchase. Its gain is more like a In a Guyatone Tube Echo pedal, it provided too little gain. If you have an amp that is "too hot" these sound nice, and will calm down amps shipped with hot preamp tubes. Sound is cleaner and more detailed. Very happy with my purchase and the speed of shipping.
Thanks guys! The JJs tamed the Lead channel's harsh and brittle sound, The Lead channel before was so harsh that I considered it unusable. The difference is remarkable from Sovteks to JJs. Thanks for the fantastic tone!!
The compact plate structure does nothing to dampen their sound or dynamic response. I find them to be well balanced. While not as harmonically rich as others I tested, they do provide high gain without the usual noise and microphonic problems you would expect.

Yes 8 No. Yes 5 No 1. Great warm vintage blues tone! Are you looking for the very best tubes for your vacuum tube amplifier? This is the place to start. Check out the following tube reviews for guidance in getting the best possible tone out of your tube gear. View our complete selection of 12AX7 vacuum tubes. Tube comparison table - reviews at a glance. The tubes used in this review were selected at random from thetubestore.
For each tube used in the test, two were taken since there was no pre-screening involved. The aim was to get a sample that would be practical to work with but allow for variations in the tubes or prevent picking the only dud in a lot. The test amplifiers used were very different. This allows the high power, high gain crowd and the more conservative players to get the fairest evaluation possible.
Some tubes were clearly better suited in one application or usable in both. All tubes were used at the input amplifier stage of the amp since this seems to be where most people develop their perceptions of how good a pre-amp tube is.
The musical detail or ability to reproduce the sound of the instrument is a key factor in assessing a tube for guitar amplifiers. There is no perfect tube available. Each one has strengths, weaknesses and certain factors that contribute to its overall ratings. Usually a compromise is arrived at in the search for premium tone.
All tubes will exhibit some degree of microphonics.
Microphonics do not mean that a tube is unusable. You just have to screen them a little closer and determine where they are best suited for use.
Input pre-amps are the most sensitive areas of the amplifier. When used in this application most tubes will generate some noise if you tap on them with a pencil during operation. Keep in mind that doing so can actually damage the tube and make it more microphonic or cause it to fail if you hit it real hard.
Although they are screened prior to shipment a tube is an electromechanical device and can be damaged during shipment.
A microphonic tube will ring, howl or produce general feedback problems. It will be more noticeable at louder volumes or when used in close proximity to a speaker, typically in combo amps.
If the tube has good tone at lower volumes and is free from unwanted noise, you use it in a less sensitive part of the circuit, such as tone recovery or phase inverter applications. Noise is more of a problem than microphonics. Its rugged design and rich harmonics make this tube an obvious choice for musicians who need a reliable and high quality tube at a reasonable price. The balanced tone of the JJ 12AX7 works well in any amp. This versatile tube sounds excellent in clean amps offering an amazing dynamic response while also proving itself in high gain amps with its low noise and noticeably less microphonic issues than other tubes.
The warm highs and transparent lows make it a great choice for any position in a tube amp. The JJ 12AX7 is the go-to tube of many amp builders and touring musicians.
Problem solved and, it may just be me but, I think it sounds better too. Good price too by the way. Nice replacement tubes for a good price.
I trust these more than I trust some of the generic tubes from China. The JJ 12AX7 preamp tube is an intelligent choice for anyone who desires low-microphonic response, improved clarity in various gain stages, and warm, balanced response that is seldom if ever harsh. The JJ is a wonderful complement to a 6L6-based power tube, and with comparatively low cost relative to other NOS preamp tubes. The standard 12AX7 works best unless your tube sockets are compatible with the gold-tined JJ preamp tube, and most amplifiers are built to accept the standard JJ 12AX7 tube.
No matter what I always end up going with JJ preamp tubes. They hold up well and are consistent. I like the sound of them better than any thing else. Very reliable, good tone, and reasonable price.
I have a small amp repair business, and sell a lot of these, with almost no returns or failures. Highly recommend! The following items can be substituted for this product. While not necessarily exactly the same, they will function as replacement items in your project. Skip to main content.
